The TCM body clock explained

There's a reason you wake at 3am.

Or crash at 3pm. Or feel wired at 11pm when you should be winding down.

TCM mapped this 2,000 years ago. They called it the Horary Clock — a 24-hour cycle where qi moves through each organ system for a two-hour window. When an organ is imbalanced, its window is when you feel it.

Here's the full clock:

3–5am · Lung Waking here often points to grief, sadness, or unprocessed emotion. The lungs govern letting go. What are you holding?

5–7am · Large intestine The body wants to release. Constipation, resistance, or difficulty with transitions may show up here.

7–9am · Stomach Your most important eating window. This is when digestive fire is strongest. A warm breakfast here is not optional — it's medicine.

9–11am · Spleen Peak mental clarity. Your best window for focused work, learning, or anything that requires concentration. Don't waste it on admin.

11am–1pm · Heart The heart governs the mind in TCM. Connection, joy, and meaningful conversation belong here. Lunch with someone you care about is genuinely therapeutic.

1–3pm · Small intestine Sorting and assimilation — physically and mentally. The afternoon slump hits here when the small intestine is taxed. A short rest is not laziness.

3–5pm · Bladder A second wave of mental energy. Good for detail work, editing, and tasks that require precision.

5–7pm · Kidney The body begins to draw inward. The kidney governs will, fear, and deep reserves. This window is for rest, not intensity.

7–9pm · Pericardium The heart protector. Emotional connection and intimacy belong here. The worst time to check emails.

9–11pm · Triple warmer The body's systems begin shutting down for repair. Fighting sleep here depletes your reserves. TCM is very clear: be horizontal.

11pm–1am · Gallbladder Deep repair begins. The gallbladder governs decision-making and courage. Sleeping through this window is when bold thinking restores itself.

1–3am · Liver The liver processes emotions and detoxifies the blood. Waking here often points to suppressed anger, unresolved frustration, or liver qi stagnation.

Screenshot this and check it the next time you wake up at a strange hour. Your body is not random. It's trying to tell you exactly what it needs.

Save this. Share it with someone who always crashes at 3pm.
